Unshackling Religious Chains
Scripture
Mark 2:18-28
Outline
Faith in the Lord Jesus is different from other worldly religions! Faith in the Lord Jesus begins with believing in Him and then rebuilds one's relationship with Him and with others throughout life, bringing joy in life, rest from burdens, and ultimately glorifying God! First, let's look at the two rounds of accusations by the Pharisees and the Lord Jesus's rebuttals, and then explore how this has any impact on our lives as disciples.
1) The groom who brings freedom and joy (18-22) Inappropriate
Accusation (18): We all do it, why don't you?
Rebuttal (19-20): It's not that we're against fasting, but rather we need to consider the underlying motives and objective circumstances.
Metaphor of clothes and wineskins (21-22)
2) The Lord who brings peace and rest (23-28) Incompatible
Accusation (23-24): Violating the Sabbath, doing what is forbidden
Rebuttal (25-28): David's experience, ultimate purpose, the Lord of the Sabbath (21-22)
3) The Significance of Faith in the Lord and the Disciple's Life
The original intent of Christian faith: to glorify God and to give us joy, freedom, peace, and rest!
Level of Impact: Not only an emotional feeling, but even more a cognitive understanding.
Source: Not only from ever-changing people and circumstances, but even more from faith in the reliable and unchanging Lord Jesus.
Focus on Time: Not only remembering the past or present events, but even more on the promises God will fulfill in the future.
Emphasis: Not only on whether one receives the joy and peace God provides, but even more on whether one receives the God who gives joy and peace.
Trigger: Not only a passive response to people or circumstances, but even more an active choice.
Religions in the world can become a prison and a heavy burden for people; faith in Christ, however, brings glory to God and joy, freedom, peace, and rest to people.
